Lorenzo Senni is a Milan-based producer, composer, and multidisciplinary artist known for exploring dance music’s archetypes. He disassembles the foundations of trance and hard techno into a style called “Pointillistic Trance,” capturing rave euphoria while omitting climactic drops and deferring musical release. Drawn to the potent emotional textures of supercharged rave timbres, he weaves them into conceptual works that emphasize tension and restraint. Senni’s 2012 Quantum Jelly crystallized this approach, harnessing the Supersaw preset on Roland’s JP-8000 to evoke Rave Voyeurism and Circumscribed Euphoria. A trained percussionist from the Italian straight-edge hardcore scene, he merges outsider detachment with the maximalist, emotional pull of rave culture.
His art merges music, visual arts, and performance, subverting the euphoric tropes of rave while exploring repetition and isolation. Collaborations with Ed Atkins, John Divola, Anne de Vries, and Friedrich Kunath have shaped his album visuals. In 2016, Senni joined Warp Records and released the EP Persona, earning an Honorary Mention at Prix Ars Electronica. His 2020 Warp debut album, Scacco Matto, drew on chess themes of introspection and strategy, winning praise from outlets like The Guardian, which noted its “punk spirit,” and Pitchfork, which called him “a grandmaster of unsolved tension.”
As founder of Presto!? Records, he has championed experimental releases by Florian Hecker, DJ Stingray, Donato Dozzy, Palmistry, Mechatok, and Curtis Roads. His compositions appear in Yuri Ancarani’s award-winning films Da Vinci and The Challenge, Netflix’s Black Mirror, and dance works by Wayne McGregor and Michele Rizzo. He has also scored campaigns for Maserati, Fendi, and Nike.
Senni’s live appearances at Tate Modern, the Venice Biennale, Centre Pompidou, Primavera Sound, Sonar, and Serpentine Gallery showcase his uncompromising fusion of punk energy and electronic innovation. He has earned international acclaim as a boundary-pushing artist. Through meticulous craft, Senni has become a forward-thinking figure bridging electronic music, art, and culture.
